Understanding Generative Engine Optimisation – A Guide Through GEO

We had a chat with our SEO Executive and GEO expert, James, to cover some frequently asked questions around Generative Engine Optimisation and AI Search.

What is GEO and how does it work?

GEO, also known as Generative Engine Optimisation, is a relatively new approach to improving online visibility in an era where AI search engines are becoming increasingly common. Instead of focusing solely on traditional search engine behaviour, GEO helps businesses optimise their content so that AI tools like Google Gemini or Chat GPT understand, reference and recommend their content and information accurately.

A lot of GEO best practice crosses over with the basic principles of SEO. GEO best practice also includes ensuring content is clear, factual and well structured to provide a solid foundation of crawlability. These qualities help both search engines and AI systems interpret the information correctly and present it as part of their answers to users. GEO is not a replacement for SEO, but an evolution that acknowledges how people increasingly search through AI powered platforms as well as traditional search engines.

How is GEO different from SEO?

Although GEO and SEO share the goal of increasing a brand’s visibility, they work in different ways. SEO focuses on improving rankings in search engines such as Google by optimising for keywords, alongside technical optimisation, high quality content, backlinks and a quality user experience. GEO, on the other hand, focuses on providing detailed and cohesive answers to questions, making content more accessible, machine readable and trustworthy for AI models.

How to optimise content for AI search?

In order to optimise content for AI search you need content that is clear, comprehensive and easy for the machine learning models behind AI search to process. Not only does best practice support GEO, it also strengthens your content.

Clear & Precise Writing – AI tools prioritise content that is well organised, factual and free from ambiguity. Short, clear sentences and logical structure help AI interpret your information accurately.

Consistent Terminology – AI systems are trained to look for patterns. Using consistent terms throughout your content makes it easier for AI search to identify topics and link any related information.

Direct Answers – Unlike SEO, which focuses on rankings, AI search tools often prioritise content that provides concise and direct answers to questions. AI answers provide cohesive information around search terms, meaning they search a number of questions to learn more about a topic. Frequent use of headings, FAQs and summary sections supplies AI search with clear responses to these questions.

Structure & Crawlability – AI crawlers benefit from structured headings, schema markup, descriptive alt text and fast page speed. These technical elements not only support GEO, but also improve overall user experience.

Will AI Replace SEO?

The impact of AI on SEO is not to be understated. With this new way of searching becoming more and more prevalent each day, there are many questions being raised around the topic – will AI replace SEO?

AI and the future of SEO are closely connected as search evolves beyond simple rankings and becomes more answer driven. Instead of replacing SEO, AI is prompting an evolution that marries traditional best practice with some tweaks inspired by GEO.

There is a shift towards ensuring clear and accurate information is provided that makes it easy for both search engines and AI models to interpret. SEO still involves thinking about brand authority, quality content, user experience but also an understanding of the needs of AI systems that pull this information directly into their responses.

While AI may replace some outdated practices, it strengthens the importance of skilled, strategic SEO & GEO that understands how people search across both traditional engines and AI powered platforms.
